Rio Grande Valley FC Toros News Release

PHOENIX, Arizona - Rio Grande Valley FC (7-10-11) faced Phoenix Rising FC (11-8-8) on the road for the 2023 season finale between the sides, the series ended 1-1-0 as both sides successfully claimed a victory at their respective home venues.

Things got serious early as Daniel Trejo took matters into his own hands very early in the match, as the clock struck just 1:12 minutes played (2'); the striker found himself with space and enough time to line up a shot from well outside the box. The ball went directly at goal, leaving Tyler Deric flat footed as he was left with no option but to watch the fading ball cruise into the goal to make the match 1-0 in favor of the home side.

Phoenix extended their lead at the 39-minute mark on a counter-produced play via a through pass between the Toros defense; the ground pass from Mohamed Traore found a closing Manuel Arteaga who one-touch rifled the ball into the top left corner of the net, 2-0.

Rio Grande Valley were held scoreless through 90 minutes of action despite creating twelve shots, five landed on target. Taylor Davila led the offensive effort with four shots of his own, landing two on target.

Numerically, Rio Grande Valley remain in the postseason picture but it is a very steep hill to climb as this pivotal match was a turning point in their playoff contention. Next up is a road game at Eastern conference side Hartford Athletic.
