September 2, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Detroit City FC News Release
Detroit, Michigan - Detroit City FC is returning to Keyworth Stadium this Saturday as they face off against Memphis 901 FC. Both teams are looking for a crucial three points in the Push for the Playoffs with Le Rouge looking to carry their momentum from last Sunday into this weekend's contest. The match is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 PM Eastern and will be streamed live on ESPN+ while also being broadcast on TV20 Detroit.
Le Rouge is coming off a crucial 3-2 road victory against Birmingham Legion FC, which saw a Ben Morris 13-minute brace and a Birmingham own goal created from Morris's pressure on the Birmingham backline that led to Detroit leaving Alabama with all three points. For that performance, Morris was named to the Week 25 USL Championship Team of the Week. This was the third time that Detroit City FC has scored more than two goals this season with the others coming against El Paso on 3/18 and against Hartford Athletic on 6/14, all three results have taken place on the road.
With the three points in the bag, Detroit City FC moved into the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They currently hold a one-point advantage on 9th place FC Tulsa and are six points behind 7th place Birmingham Legion FC. Detroit City currently controls its own destiny and still has crucial games coming up against Miami FC, Indy Eleven, Loudoun United, and Hartford Athletic.
Memphis comes into Saturday's matchup off of a 1-0 loss to Charleston Battery, who are managed by former Memphis 901 FC man Ben Pirmann, after enjoying a four-game unbeaten streak. They currently sit in 5th place in the Eastern Conference on 38 points with only 25 games played and a goal difference of 2.
These two faced off earlier this season at AutoZone Park in June, where both teams came away with a point after a 0-0 draw. Detroit City has never beaten Memphis 901 FC, as Memphis has won two games and drawn two games in this matchup's history, including a win over Le Rouge in last year's USL Championship Playoffs with former Detroit City FC manager Ben Pirmann on the touchline for Memphis.
