Today's Preview: The Grasshoppers (A, Marlins) wrap up this series with a doubleheader against the Shorebirds (A, Orioles) at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The two teams split the first two games of the series in a pair of 1-run games, which has been a bit of a Hoppers specialty this season. Greensboro currently sits 4.0 games back of the first place Lakewood BlueClaws while Delmarva is tied with Hickory in second place, a half-game back from the South Atlantic League Northern Division leader.
Double Trouble: Greensboro is 8-4 (.667) in doubleheader games in 2018, the third-best winning percentage in the league this season. Only 9-3 Rome (.750) and 7-3 Kannapolis (.700) have better winning percentages in doubleheader games in 2018. Delmarva is 6-6 in their twin bill contests this season.
Hoppers Hurler: Daniel Castano, 23, makes his fifth start for the Grasshoppers and his second against Delmarva. He is coming off his roughest outing of the year, allowing seven runs (four earned) on nine hits over 5.0 innings in a July 15 loss to Asheville. Despite the opponent's run total, he still managed to strike out eight batters while walking none, once again upping his strikeout total to 31 Ks in 25.0 innings with the Grasshoppers without issuing a walk. In his first start against Delmarva, he tossed 6.0 shutout innings with eight strikeouts. The left-hander began 2018 with a 5-6 record and 5.65 ERA (36 ER/57.1 IP), 37 strikeouts compared to 22 walks, and a .315 average against in 11 games (11 starts) in the Florida State League before a pair of rehab appearances with the GCL Marlins. His combined stats this season are 5-7 with a 5.43 ERA (40 ER/66.1 IP) in 13 games (12 starts). The Marlins acquired Castano on Dec. 14, 2017, as part of the trade that sent former Grasshopper and Major League outfielder Marcell Ozuna to the Cardinals. St. Louis selected Castano in the 19th round of the June 2016 First-Year Player Draft out of Baylor. He spent last season in the New York-Penn League, going 9-3 with a 2.57 ERA (26 ER/91.0 IP) and 81 strikeouts in 14 games (14 starts) with the State College Spikes.
Last Time Out: Delmarva scored a walk-off win over Greensboro, 3-2, on Friday night when Zach Jarrett singled off Michael Mertz to cash Mason McCoy with two outs in the ninth. Nick Vespi (4-3) earned the win after blowing the save when he allowed one run on two hits over 2.0 relief innings, striking out four. Nestor Bautista (1-2) took the loss with one run allowed in 1.2 innings, striking out three and walking one. The Hoppers trailed by one, 2-1, heading into the eighth when Thomas Jones - who reached base on a Shorebirds error - crossed the plate thanks to a Tristan Pompey base hit to tie the game. Delmarva arms combined to strikeout 14. Cameron Bishop led the way with eight in 5.0 innings.
Walked Off: Greensboro had avoided suffering a walk-off loss since April until Friday's late-game defeat at Delmarva. The Grasshoppers are now 4-3 in walk-off games in 2018, with their previous loss coming April 17 in a 10-inning defeat at Lakewood, 5-4. Here is a look at walk-off games the Grasshoppers have played this season (wins in bold).
