ABOUT LAST GAME: The Fireflies battled the GreenJackets into extras on Saturday before falling, 7-5, in 11 innings. Columbia rallied back from an early three-run hole and tied the game in the seventh. Reliever Yeizo Campos paved the way for the home team's rally with five shut-out frames out of the bullpen. Each team scored a run in the 10th before Augusta pulled ahead for good in the 11th.
EXTRAS: Saturday was the 13th extra-inning game Columbia has played in this season. Due to the new Minor League Baseball extra-inning base-runner *rule, the Fireflies have not needed more than two extra frames in any of the 13 to decide a winner. In fact, Columbia and its opponent have needed just one extra inning to decide a winner in 10 of the 13 games.
*A base-runner is placed at second base to start every frame of extras.
SUPER SCOTT: Catcher Scott Manea notched another base hit on Saturday and, in total, reached base three times. Manea has put together a splendid month of July:
- 17 GP: .317 (19-for-60), .414 OBP, 9 R, 8 2B, 3 HR, 17 RBI, 8 BB
His July batting average is the highest on the team and the catcher starts his 15th straight game on Sunday. Also of note, no player in the league has more July extra-base hits than Manea.
RECIPE FOR SUCCESS?: Columbia faces a left-handed starter today in Caleb Baragar. Fireflies infielder Hansel Moreno-a switch-hitter-owns the best batting average against lefties on the team (.333, 16-for-48). Coincidentally enough, the 21-year-old has also performed well at the plate against the GreenJackets. Moreno has hit .342 against the Interstate 20 rivals-that's also the best mark on the team.
A FIRST!: It comes with no surprise, then, that Moreno notched his first three-hit game of the season on Saturday against Augusta.
INTERSTATE 20 RIVALRY: Columbia and Augusta have battled 17 times this season. Eight of these meetings have been decided by two runs or less. The Fireflies are 7-3 against the GreenJackets over the last 10 encounters. Columbia recently updated its own record book in a game against Augusta on July 2. Scott Manea tied a single-game record with 6 RBIs. The Fireflies scored 16 runs, matching a club record.
