Swift Current Broncos News Release
Swift Current, SK - The Swift Current Broncos (1-0-0-0) began the season with a thrilling 3-2 overtime win over the Calgary Hitmen last weekend, and are now set to host the Medicine Hat Tigers (1-1-0-0) at the Innovation Credit Union iPlex Friday night.
Last weekend, Joona Kiviniemi's overtime winner with 0.9 seconds left on the clock lifted the Broncos over the Hitmen. Isaac Poulter stopped a penalty shot from Josh Prokop just moments earlier, setting the stage for the dramatic finish.
Receiving a power play with just six seconds left in overtime, Ben King won the draw to Alex Moar, who patiently skated down the boards and into the corner before firing a centring pass to a wide open Kiviniemi to end the game.
In regulation, Carter Chorney opened the scoring in the first before the Hitmen tied it late in the period on a goal by Carson Focht. Ethan Regnier connected on a penalty shot in the second period, and the 2-1 lead held up until the final minute of regulation.
Egor Zamula's wrist shot from the blue line beat a screened Isaac Poulter with 18 seconds remaining in regulation, sending the game to overtime.
The Tigers opened their season with a home-and-home series against the Lethbridge Hurricanes. In the first game in Lethbridge, Medicine Hat erased 2-0 and 3-1 deficits to force the game to a shootout. The first five shooters scored, before rookie Zack Stringer was stopped by Mads Søgaard as the Tigers completed the comeback with a 4-3 win.
The next night in Medicine Hat, the Hurricanes led 2-0 through 40 minutes and would hit the empty netter in the final minute to split the series with a 3-1 win.
Friday is the first of eight meetings between the Broncos and Tigers this season, though following this weekend they won't see each other again until December 27.
In the four-game series last year, the Tigers picked up the clean sweep while outscoring the Broncos by a 13-6 margin.
