BLOOMINGTON, Ill. _ The PrairieThunder traded defenseman Ryan Gillis to the Kalamazoo Wings on Friday for defenseman Casey Handrahan.

Gillis, who joined the PrairieThunder after being traded from Port Huron early in the season, played 49 games for the PrairieThunder. The 30-year-old Gillis scored five goals and had 17 assists for 22 points.

The 26-year-old Handrahan (HAND-ra-HAN) was in his second year with Kalamazoo. He scored two goals and added 23 assists for 25 points. He has a minus-eight rating. Gillis had a minus-11 rating.

Handrahan, who hails from Niagara Falls, Ont., (the same town as PrairieThunder coach Derek Booth), helped Kalamazoo win the United Hockey League Colonial Cup last season, scoring one goal with four assists in 24 regular season games for five points. He had three assists in 13 playoff games for three points.

The trade also completes a preseason deal that brought Tyler Rennette to the PrairieThunder for Jeff Brown and a player to be named.

"We hated to part with Ryan because he was a solid performer for us and a good teammate," said Booth. "But we had to send Kalamazoo a player to complete the earlier deal before today's trade deadline. We feel we are getting another solid D-man in Casey, who we hope will help us in our push for the playoffs."

The PrairieThunder meets Chicago in the first of a two-game series with the Hounds tonight at U.S. Cellular Coliseum. The Hounds return to face Bloomington again Saturday. Both games start at 7:05 p.m.
