Elmira Jackals News Release
Elmira, NY - The Elmira Jackals announced today that they have traded captain Brent Cullaton to the Kalamazoo Wings in exchange for forward Glenn Detulleo, defenseman Joe Markusen and forward Andrew Leach.
"This was an extremely difficult decision to make," said Jackals General Manager Robbie S. Nichols. "Brent Cullaton has done a lot for the Jackals organization this year and has handled himself with the utmost professionalism and class. We want to thank Brett for all of his work this year and wish him and his family the best of luck."
Glenn Detulleo is an explosive offensive forward who has enjoyed a lot of success since his 2005-06 breakout season. Playing in his third year pro, Detulleo posted 70 points (17 goals, 53 points) in 76 games for the Quad City Mallards in 2005-06. Since then he hasn't stopped scoring. The Timmins, Ontario native started the 2006-07 season with Quad City, before being dealt to Kalamazoo. At 5'7", 170 lbs, Detulleo has 42 points (11 goals, 31 assists) this season in 55 games played combined between the Mallards and K-Wings.
Joe Markusen has been a steady defensive force for the K-Wings this season, scoring 17 points (5 goals, 12 assists), 95 penalty minutes and a +10 rating. In his third year as a professional, the Grafton, North Dakota native split the 2005-06 season between the Rockford IceHogs and the Adirondack Frostbite. The 26-year old has played in 128 pro games, posting 30 points (9 goals, 21 assists) and 119 penalty minutes. Markusen played 4-years of Division I college hockey for the Michigan State Spartans of the CCHA, appearing in 155 career NCAA games.
Andrew Leach is in his first season as a professional, but he also comes from a very prestigious NCAA hockey program. The Altamont, New York native played 4-years of Division I college hockey for the University of New Hampshire Wildcats of Hockey East, where he appeared in 93 career NCCA games. At 6'1", 205 lbs, Leach has 15 points (6 goals, 9 assists) and 46 penalty minutes in 48 games this season for Kalamazoo. The 25-year old also played two seasons of junior hockey for the Des Moines Buccaneers of the USHL.
"We wanted to get a first line player in return and we think Glenn Detulleo is that guy," said Nichols. "He is a small, speedy forward who is a point producer and should be a great addition to our lineup. We also added Joe Markusen who has been a very solid defenseman for Kalamazoo and we liked the gritty, hard working style of play that Andrew Leach brings to the table."
Brent Cullaton leaves the Jackals for Kalamazoo after leading the Jackals in scoring with 57 points (18 goals, 39 assists) in 47 games played. He was also named to the 2007 UHL All-Star Classic in Fort Wayne, where he was named the games Most Valuable Player. The Jackals will play the Kalamazoo Wings for the first time since this transaction on Friday March 23rd at First Arena, when Cullaton and the K-Wings come to two for a two-game weekend series.
None of the three new players acquired by the Jackals in this trade will be able to make it to Elmira in time to be in the lineup Friday night as the Jackals take on the Flint Generals at First Arena for a 7:35 pm face off. However, they are expected to meet Elmira on the road Saturday in Flint.
