BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Craig Macdonald scored four points and goalie Andrew Martin won his second straight game Saturday night to lead the Bloomington PrairieThunder to a 5-2 International Hockey League victory over Quad City before 2,834 people at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.
The win kept the PrairieThunder undefeated in six games at home this season and pushed its home victory string to seven, dating back to last year. It also moved Bloomington into sole possession of first place in the standings with an 8-3-0-1 record and 17 points.
The six straight victories at home to start the season is the best in franchise history and one shy of the longest overall home winning streak, which was set last season. The longest undefeated overall streak at home is nine, also set a year ago.
Macdonald scored his first of two goals just 18 seconds into the game on an unassisted effort. The PrairieThunder took a 2-0 advantage when Brett Holmberg added his first goal of the season with 14:46 remaining in the second period on a power play with an assist to Russ Smith.
Macdonald scored his second goal 10 minutes later with assists to Jon Booras and Jason Lepine. Mike Zbriger then scored the first Quad City goal 32 seconds later off assists from Terry Harrison and Patrick Levesque
Jamie Carroll scored 16 seconds into the third period for Bloomington on a power play with assists to Booras and Macdonald. Matt McIlvane had the final PrairieThunder goal on an empty-net effort off a Macdonald assist.
Martin earned the victory in net for Bloomington, stopping 26 of 28 shots. The PrairieThunder had 30 shots on goal and was was 2 for 6 on the power play. Quad City was unsuccessful on six power play attempts.
Bloomington returns to action Sunday with a 4:05 p.m. contest against Quad City at the iWireless Center in Moline.
