Icehawks Sweep Home And Home Series With Generals

PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks edged the Flint Generals 2-1 at McMorran Arena on Sunday to sweep a home-and-home series with their I-69 rivals. The win comes a night after the Icehawks routed the Generals 5-1 at Perani Arena.

With the victory, the third place Icehawks improve to 8-3-0-0 on the young International Hockey League season and now sit two points out of first place with 16 points. The Generals dip to 3-9-0-2 and remain in six place with eight points.

The two teams traded goals in the first period and emerged from the stanza tied 1-1. Flint struck first when Jamie Schaafsma netted an unassisted goal at 10:07. The Icehawks evened the score just over four minutes later with a Daniel Tetrault power play goal at 14:21. Mikael Bedard and Nick Lindberg assisted. The Generals outshot the Icehawks 11-7 in the first period.

The Icehawks outshot the Generals 9-4 in the second period, but neither team found the back of the net. The game remained tied until 7:34 in the third period when Icehawk Derek Patrosso beat goalie Rob Nolan for the eventual game winner. Lindberg and Mike Gershon were credited with the assists. The Icehawks held the shot advantage in the third period (17-10) and overall (33-25).

Icehawks goalie Adam Russo improved his personal record to 4-2-0-0, making 24 saves to earn the win. Generals netminder Nolan kept his team in the game with 31 saves on 33 shots.

The Icehawks head to Muskegon on Wednesday to play the Lumberjacks at 10:30 a.m., before returning home to host the Quad City Mallards on Friday and the Dayton Gems on Saturday. Both weekend games are at 7:30 p.m.

Game Notes: Mike Kinnie, who received a ten-minute misconduct for a fight in the second period, saw his eight game point streak come to an end tonight...The Icehawks remain undefeated versus the Generals this season (4-0-0-0).
