Dayton Gems News Release
FORT WAYNE, IN - The Dayton Gems and the Fort Wayne Komets have met just two times this season and for the second consecutive game they needed overtime to decide the issue. The Gems suffered their second straight loss of the weekend falling 2-1 in overtime to the Fort Wayne Komets on Saturday night at Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. The Gems saw their record fall to 5-6-2-0, while the Fort Wayne Komets improved to 7-2-0-0.
It was a tight defensive battle from start to finish. The Gems were trailing 1-0 in the third period when Ryan Nathe scored to tie the game. Edgars Brancis and Sam Bloom notched assists on the goal. However, in overtime, Matt Auffrey was penalized for slashing and that gave Fort Wayne a power play and it wouldn't take them long to score as PC Drouin talled 39 seconds into the extra session.
The Gems came out strong in the opening 20 minutes, but it would be the Fort Wayne Komets that would score the first goal. Matt Woodard scored at the 6:06 mark to give the homeside an early lead. Dayton outshot Fort Wayne 12-10 in the first period.
Defense dominated the second period as teams combined for just 15 shots with Fort Wayne getting the advantage by one 8-7. There were just four total power plays in the first 40 minutes with Fort Wayne having three of them. Greg Labenski led the Gems in shots on goal with eight while John Snowden had four and Matt Auffrey with three.
