Quad City Mallards News Release
Moline, Ill. (November 15, 2009) - Terry Harrison- who also scored in regulation- and Mike Zbriger converted the decisive penalty shots and Kyle Jones made 37 saves in regulation and overtime and three more on penalty shots as the host Quad City Mallards, proud International Hockey League (IHL) affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, Sunday evening defeated the Bloomington PrairieThunder in a shootout 4-3.
The Mallards came from behind to outscore the PrairieThunder 2-1 in the shootout after overtime ended tied at three. John Booras's backhander gave Bloomington a 1-0 shootout lead but Harrison would tie the score by wristing home the Mallards' third and final regulation penalty shot and Zbriger then used the fourth Quad City penalty shot to fire the winner in off of Thunder goaltender Andrew Martin's (38 saves) shoulder.
Overtime and the shootout only proved necessary after Bloomington's Craig MacDonald scored his second goal of the game from the doorstep on the power play with just 3.3 seconds left in regulation to knot the score at three.
It was the Mallards who had rallied earlier in the third period to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead. Harrison buried a Juris Stals centering pass to even the game at two at 3:51 of the third. At 10:01 the Mallards were on the power play when A.J. Bozoian drove the tie breaker in off the bottom of the crossbar.
The Flock had first battled from behind when Joel Gasper scored from the side of the net to erase a 1-0 PrairieThunder lead at 8:52 of the second period. Just over a minute later Bloomington moved right back on top when MacDonald scored from the left wing circle.
Russ Smith scored the only goal of the first period with a drive from the top of the left circle 7:31 into the game.
The Mallards are next in action when they visit Port Huron Friday night. After traveling to Muskegon to take on the Lumberjacks Saturday evening, the Flock will return home next Sunday afternoon, November 22, to battle the Fort Wayne Komets at 4:00 p.m. The first 500 fans ages 12-and-under through the doors for that game will receive free webkinz plush toys. After the game fans can lace up their skates and join the Mallards on the ice for Family Skate Night.
