
Icehawks Earn Decisive 5-1 Win Over Generals

FLINT, MI - Mikael Bedard scored two goals on Saturday to lead the Port Huron Icehawks to a 5-1 victory over the Flint Generals at Perani Arena. The win improved Port Huron to 7-3-0-0 on the season and 3-0-0-0 against the Generals.
The Icehawks erupted for three goals early in the second period, on their way to a 4-1 lead through two periods. Kris Vernarsky tied the game at 2:02 with a power play goal on a deflection of a Tab Lardner shot. Lardner then gave the Icehawks the lead at 3:57 when he tapped in a loose puck in the crease. Mike Kinnie and Vernarsky assisted on the goal.
Cory Stillman extended the lead to two goals at 4:52 with a one timer from the right circle on a Nick Lindberg pass. Bedard then added a tap in goal off a perfect feed from Kerry Bowman on an odd man rush up the ice at 12:10 of the period. Jamie Lovell also had an assist on the goal. Each team had 11 shots on goal in the second period.
Bedard scored his second goal of the night just 2:11 into the third, tipping in a point shot by Adam Maccarone. Jason Selleke, playing in his first game of the season, added the second helper on the play. Flint outshot Port Huron 7-4 in the period.
Flint skated to a 1-0 lead through a penalty filled first period, which featured six minors, six majors, and three misconducts for 72 penalty minutes. The Generals Tony Tuzzolino cashed in on one of Flint's three first period power plays, scoring on a rebound at 6:16 from Jamie Schaafsma and Tyler Howells. The Generals outshot the Icehawks 15-10 in the period.
Icehawks goalie Larry Sterling made 32 saves for the win and Port Huron penalty killers held Flint to 1-8 on the power play. The Icehawks went 1-4 with the man advantage.
