Madison Mallards News Release
MADISON, WI - August 1, 2011. The Madison Mallards defeated the La Crosse Loggers 4-3 Monday night in front of 5,353 happy fans at the "Duck Pond." The game went ten innings and gave the Mallards a three-game sweep of the Loggers and a six-game winning streak. With the win, Madison now sits 1.5 games behind La Crosse for first place in the South Division standings.
Like the two games leading up to the series finale, Monday's contest was filled with drama and exciting plays.
The Loggers looked ready to end the Mallards' winning streak by scoring first for the second straight game. Trevor Brown (UCLA) led off the third inning with a double and scored on a hit by Trentt Copeland (Evansville) to put La Crosse up 1-0. The Loggers also scored once in the fifth and seventh innings respectively to bring their team total to three runs on the night.
The Mallards showed that they would not go down easy yet again by responding to their 1-0 deficit in the third. Catcher Matt Mirabal (Illinois State) walked with one out and scored as the very next batter, Justin Parr (Illinois), doubled him home.
The Ducks trailed 3-1 at their lowest point of the night, but came back in the eighth inning to tie the game as Justin Scanlon (Michigan State) and Mike McQuillan (Iowa) each reached base safely to start the frame. Jordan Owen (Tennessee - Martin) successfully sacrificed the pair to second and third with only one out. Scanlon scored on a wild pitch, and McQuillan came around to score on a double by Zack Powers (Florida).
Powers was far from done at that point.
The Mallards threatened in the ninth inning when they had two on and only one out, but failed to score to send the game into extra innings. In the tenth, Willie Argo (Illinois) drew a one-out walk and stole a base to set the table. Powers came up again and delivered with a line drive to right field for a base hit on a 2-2 count, allowing Argo to score the game-winning run with ease, sending the Mallards' dugout into a frenzy.
Pitching kept Madison in the game again Monday night. Starter Tom Windle (Minnesota) seemed to find his groove after going through some mid-season struggles. Although Windle did not factor in the decision, the lefty went 5.1 innings, allowing two runs (one unearned) one seven hits. He walked two and struck out seven batters.
Travis Parker (St. Louis) came on in relief of Windle and allowed a run in the seventh, but from there, the Mallards' bullpen was lights out. Parker struck out two in 1.2 innings of work before handing the ball over to Dan Tobik (Tennessee - Martin). Tobik went a solid three innings to pick up his second win of the season against just one loss.
The losing pitcher for the Loggers Monday was Dan Child (Oregon State). The right-handed pitcher went the final 2.1 innings for La Crosse and surrendered the winning run. Despite the loss, Child (2-2) struck out four batters and got the team out of a couple of jams. Both of Child's losses have come at the hands of the Mallards at the "Duck Pond."
The Mallards are now 8-2 against the Loggers this season.
The Mallards will hit the road Tuesday to begin a home-and-home series with the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters. Tuesday's game will start at 7:05 p.m. at Witter Field, and will feature Jonathon Crawford (Florida) as the Mallards' starting pitcher. After Tuesday's contest, both teams will head back to the "Duck Pond" for their final matchup of the season, which will also have a 7:05 p.m. start time.
