St. Cloud River Bats News Release
(Alexandria, MN) Three ninth inning runs allowed Alexandria to topple the Bats in walk off fashion. The 4-3 defeat marks the Bats second loss in a row.
Ron Sucre shined for the Bats driving a pair of doubles into the left field corner. The Bats third base man scored and knocked in a run to lead the Bats offensively.
His Pitt teammate, Alex Caravella pitched superbly for St. Cloud. In his first start of the season, Caravella surrendered just one run and struck out six. He held the Beetles without a base runner for the first three innings.
Zeros dominated the scoreboard until the the third inning. Sucre led off with a two Bagger. Henkemeyer smacked a double of his own. The Bats had two runners in scoring position.
Sucre scored on a wild pitch to put the Bats on the board first. A Derek Campbell single delivered Henkemeyer and the Bats held a two run advantage.
The Beetles cut into the Bats lead in the sixth. Tanner Vavra picked up one his three base hits. He touched home on a Chad Bunting sacrifice bunt.
The Bats retaliated in the seventh. Sucre plated C.J. Gillman with his second double to push the Bats advantage back to two.
Things seemed formulaic for the Bats who handed the ball to lights out closer, Travis Unthank. However, Unthank uncharacteristically allowed three Beetles runs. A walk off single by Vavra knocked home Jeremy Boyd to give the Beetles the win.
A 4.5 game gap separates the Bats from the first place Beetles. Matt Iannazzo looks to help the Bats gain some ground when he starts in the final game of this three game series.
The Bats return home Thursday for Vikings night presented by Bernick's Miller Lite, as St. Cloud welcomes Thunder Bay to town. This game will also begin $10 Thursdays at Joe Faber Field. Fans will receive a general admission ticket, a hat, a hot dog, and a coke for just ten bucks.
