THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia opened a four game series at Lakewood with a 7-0 win on Thursday. Luis Heredia pitched five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while earning the win. The Power offense backed him with one run in the third and four in the fifth before plating two late runs in the ninth. Five different players had two hits apiece to key the offense. Walker Gourley drove in a pair of runs and scored twice with Eric Wood and Luis Urena notching credit for the only other runs batted in.
SHUTOUT SHOUTOUTS: The Power pitching staff notched itsÂf tenth shutout of the season and third against Lakewood on Thursday. Luis Heredia, Tom Harlan, Clario Perez, and Jhondaniel Medina held the BlueClaws in check. Ten shutouts in a season ranks as the second most in franchise history, trailing only the 2011 club that recorded 13 shutouts. So far this season, half of the teams in the South Atlantic League have recorded 10 shutouts or more, led by LexingtonÂfs 14. Only four clubs have been shutout ten times or more this season.
ROUND SIX: The Power battle the Lakewood BlueClaws again this evening. West Virginia has gone 18-3 against Lakewood so far this season, having put together winning streaks of seven, five, and six over the first five series plus Thursday night. The Power now lead the all-time series against the BlueClaws 71-61. Prior to 2013, West Virginia had never won more than 13 games against any one opponent in any season.
THANK YOU KARMA: The Lakewood BlueClaws hosted a WVU Alumni Night Thursday with the Power in town and the Mountaineer was in attendance. The sellout of 8,000 was the largest crowd that the West Virginia Power have played in front of this season. Four of the five largest crowds the Power have played in front of this season have been at FirstEnergy Park.
BELL BRINGS IT: Josh Bell enters play tonight riding the longest hitting streak of his career. The outfielder has hit safely in ten straight, batting .410 since July 30 with 16 hits over 39 at bats. It is the third longest streak by an Power player this season, two off matching Barrett Barnes and Walker GourleyÂfs 12 games streaks.
KING OF THE K: Tyler GlasnowÂfs seventh strikeout on Wednesday set a new single season Power record, surpassing Will InmanÂfs 2006 mark of 134. Glasnow finished with 12 strikeouts and pushed the record to 140, accomplished over 97.1 innings pitched. Inman retired 134 on strikes over 110.2 innings for the then-Milwaukee Brewers affiliated Power club.
BEST TOOLS EDITION: Baseball America announced itsÂf 2013 Best Tools List for the South Atlantic League on Tuesday. Tyler Glasnow was honored as the Best Pitching Prospect and for having the Top Fastball in the league. Dilson Herrera was selected as the Best Defensive Second Baseman.
PROMO UPDATE: AUGUST 16th- FAN APPRECIATION NIGHT: This Friday night game is a 7:05 contest against the Hickory Crawdads with a team photo handed out to the fans before the game.
POWER POINTS: Walker Gourley has hit safely in six straight, including five multi-hit games to raise his average to the .330Âfs for the first time since June 30... Tyler GlasnowÂfs 12 strikeouts on Wednesday matched his season (and career) high for a single game, but for the second time this season, the right-hander did not earn the victory when striking out a dozen... Raul FortunatoÂfs on-base streak was stopped at 10 games by going 0-5 Thursday night... West Virginia has 24 games remaining during the 2013 regular season, including 14 away from Appalachian Power Park.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh walked off with a 5-4 win in 10 innings and a series sweep over Miami on Thursday afternoon. Russell Martin singled in Josh Harrison for the victory... Indianapolis walked off with a 2-1 win over Toledo in 10... Altoona lost 1-0 at Binghamton... Bradenton won itsÂf second straight, knocking off St. Lucie 5-3. Taylor Lewis and Gift Ngoepe drove in two runs each... Jamestown blanked Vermont 4-0.
