
Shorebirds Tripped up by Intimidators, 7-5

Kannapolis, NC - The Delmarva Shorebirds (18-30) scored three runs in the eighth inning, but fell short in a 7-5 loss to the Kannapolis Intimidators (19-28) on Friday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The series is tied at one game apiece.
The Shorebirds took an early 2-0 in the first inning. Adrian Marin hit a one out single. Then, Torsten Boss doubled to right field to put runners at second and third. Wynston Sawyer followed with an infield RBI single to third, his 13th RBI in the last eight games. Kannapolis third baseman Nick Basto threw the ball away and Boss also scored.
Kannapolis countered in the bottom of the first. With two men aboard, Michael Marjama hit a three-run homer to give Kannapolis a 3-2 lead.
Shorebirds starter Matt Taylor went six innings and yielded six hits and three runs. Taylor struck out six and walked four.
The score remained 3-2 until the seventh inning when Kannapolis broke the game opened. Casey Upperman replaced Taylor to begin the seventh. The first two batters reached on a walk and a hit by pitch. Tim Anderson followed with a single to stretch the lead to 4-2. Jason Coats hit a two-run single to put Kannapolis in front 6-2. Coats would later scored on a ground out to second by Kale Kiser.
Kannapolis starter Adam Lopez held the Shorebirds scoreless from the second through the seventh innings. Lopez scattered eight hits and gave up two runs with eight strikeouts.
The Shorebirds battled back in the eighth inning. Boss, who went 3-for-5, led off with a ground rule double to left-center field. Then, Sawyer doubled to left to put runners at second and third. Lucas Herbst followed with a two-run triple to trim the deficit to 7-4. Herbst scored on a wild pitch to pull the Shorebirds within two runs.
Kannapolis reliever Jeffrey Wendelken came on in the ninth inning and held the Shorebirds scoreless to end the game.
Jose Nivar tossed a scoreless eighth inning for Delmarva. He did not allow a hit.
The Shorebirds and Intimidators play game three on Saturday, August 10 at 7:05pm. RHP Parker Bridwell is the scheduled starter for Delmarva.
