(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) Bubba Starling not only took a home run away from a Hagerstown hitter, he also hit a 450-foot homer as the Lexington Legends won their fifth straight game, a 5-2 win over the Hagerstown Suns Friday night.
The Legends maintained their one and one-half game lead over Augusta in the South Atlantic League Southern Division race. The GreenJackets defeated Greensboro, 5-4.
In the top of the second inning, Starling, the Legends' center fielder, leaped and reached over the wall to rob Hagerstown's Wander Ramos of a home run.
The Suns took a 1-0 lead in the third on a walk to Narciso Mesa and a double by Tony Renda. The Legends tied the game in the fourth when Terrance Gore singled, stole second and scored on Starling's two-out double. The steal was Gore's league-leading 62nd of the season.
The score was still tied 1-1 with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Raul Mondesi singled and then came around to score the go-ahead run when Mesa dropped a fly ball to short center field hit by Mark Threlkeld. That gave Starling an opportunity to bat, and with Threlkeld on at second, Starling launched one high and far over the left center field wall to give the Legends a 4-1 lead.
Mondesi's homer in the eighth inning closed out the Legends scoring.
The Suns added a run in the ninth on a two-out, bases-loaded single by Shawn Pleffner, but Wes Schill was caught in a rundown between third and home to end the game.
Legends starter Crawford Simmons (2-3) worked the first six innings and got the win. Mark Peterson picked up his 16th save of the season.
Hagerstown starter Kylin Turnbull (5-5) was the losing pitcher. He struck out eight batters and walked none, and three of the four runs he allowed were unearned.
The Legends have won five straight games, including the first two of the four-game series with Hagerstown. The two teams meet again Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
