Salisbury, MD (May 6, 2009) - The West Virginia Power brought their six game losing streak to an end on Wednesday night as they split their double header with the Delmarva Shorebirds at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium, falling 5-1 in game one and taking game two 8-1.
Five run innings were key factors in the double header. In game one, Chase D'Arnaud doubled to score Austin McClune in the third inning, plating West Virginia's only run of the contest. Right Hander Gabriel Alvarado pitched four scoreless innings of one-hit ball for the Power, and the only hit he surrendered was an infield single. He was taken out after the fourth inning because he was on a pitch count.
Kyle McPherson took over for the Alvarado in the fifth and surrendered five runs on four hits. He appeared to have gotten out of a bases loaded jam with two outs, when Kyle Hudson hit a routine ground ball to first base. The ball got stuck in first baseman Erik Huber's glove, forcing Huber to toss the glove with the ball stuck inside it over to first base, but Hudson beat it out, allowing the tying run to score. The next batter, L.J. Hoes ripped a bases clearing double and scored the final run on Ron Welty's base hit.
The Power benefited from four Delmarva errors in game two, and used a five run frame of their own to beat the Shorebirds. In the first inning, Quincy Latimore scored on an errant double play relay throw from Greg Miclat. The Power then scored five times in the second inning and pulled away. Miclat's errant throw on another potential double play allowed Edward Garcia to score the first run before Chase D'Arnaud's two run double and run scoring singles from Quincy Latimore and Calvin Anderson. Josue Peley ripped an RBI single in the third and Jeremy Farrell brought in West Virginia's final run on a run scoring single in the fourth. The Power surrendered their lone run in the seventh when Jedidiah Stephen scored on a wild pitch.
In game one, Cole McCurry (2-0) held the Power to just a run on four hits over six innings to score the win. McPherson (1-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing all five runs on four hits in the fifth inning. In game two, Maurice Bankston (1-2) tossed five scoreless innings of four hit ball and fanned four batters in a winning effort. Colin Allen (0-2) surrendered six runs on five hits over two innings and was tagged with the loss.
West Virginia is 7-18 after the split, and the Shorebirds are 13-10 after the split. Before their victory in game two, West Virginia had not won a game in ten days. Their last victory was Sunday, April 26th against Greensboro. The six game losing streak is their longest of the season. Robbie Grossman sat out the double header and will miss one more game, while serving a suspension due to his involvement in the fight with Hagerstown last Thursday. Calvin Anderson's suspension is over and he went 1-for-4 in game two with an RBI single.
West Virginia will continue the four game series against the Delmarva Shorebirds at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Thursday night. Left hander Tyler Cox (0-3, 9.50) will start for West Virginia and the Shorebirds will counter with right hander Ryan O'Shea (1-1, 4.87). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
