Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - Justin Edwards did his part and the Intimidators offense posted a season-high run total, as Kannapolis beat up on Lakewood 9-3 on Wednesday morning at FirstEnergy Park.
Edwards, who was making his first start since having Tommy John surgery a year ago, was dominant in five innings of work. The southpaw gave up one unearned run on one hit. Edwards (1-0) also struck out nine and walked just one.
And while Edwards was keeping the BlueClaws at bay, the Intimidators offense was posting its best run output of the season. Kannapolis (15-11) got two runs in the first, four in the second and three more in the fifth to put the game out of reach early. Lakewood starter Jon Velasquez (5-1) was charged with all nine runs in his five innings on the bump.
Drew Garcia and Tyler Kuhn each had three RBIs, though it was Garcia who had a chance for something special. Garcia had a double, a triple and a home run entering the ninth inning, but grounded out in his final at-bat to finish a single shy of the cycle.
Jorge Castillo had three hits, while Joe Persichina and John Curtis also had multi-hit ballgames.
The Intimidators, who gave up a five-run lead in the final two innings on Tuesday night, looked a bit shaky in the ninth, committing two errors to allow a run to score. But Tyson Corley managed to shut the door to keep Lakewood (14-11) from doing any more damage.
Kannapolis moved to 5-1 on the season in day games.
