Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON S.C. - The Charleston RiverDogs were blasted for seven runs in the sixth inning on Saturday night and were two-hit by the West Virginia Power, 8-0, in front of 4,586 at Joe Riley Park.
Fighting for the final playoff spot in the Northern Division, the Power (71-60, 34-31) took a first inning lead against Charleston (62-73, 29-37) when right fielder Calvin Mitchell's groundout scored 2018 10th overall pick Travis Swaggerty.
After relinquishing the early lead, RiverDogs starter Nolan Martinez (0-4) held West Virginia scoreless until the sixth when the Power erupted for seven runs. Five of the runs came off Martinez including a solo home run by Mitchell and a two-run long ball for catcher Rafelin Lorenzo.
Right-hander Austin DeCarr surrendered the final two Power runs on a Deon Stafford double that scored left fielder Lolo Sanchez and shortstop Connor Kaiser. West Virginia sent 12 to the plate and collected seven of their 13 hits in the decisive frame.
The RiverDogs drew five walks but managed just a pair of hits in the loss, both coming against the West Virginia starter, lefty Ike Schlabach (8-4). Right-hander Max Kranick earned his first save in his first outing in relief this year with three scoreless innings and three strikeouts.
The Power have shut out the RiverDogs in three of their last five meetings, including back-to-back blankings at Appalachian Power Park on August 19 and 20. The Dogs have been held scoreless in five of their last 13 games and have been shut out 14 times this season.
With the victory, West Virginia's magic number to clinch the final Northern Division playoff spot over the Kannapolis Intimidators will be at least two with a chance to clinch on Sunday evening at Riley Park.
Ballpark Fun
The RiverDogs celebrated National No Rhyme or Reason Day by performing gimmicks so ridiculous that the only question you could ask is 'why?' But there was no explanation. There was in fact a flock of flamingos outside the park, a live FaceTime on the videoboard, and most importantly, the final Fly-In Helicopter ball drop of the season where one lucky fan won $10,000.
Upcoming
Sunday's game three begins at 5:05 as righty Shawn Semple (1-0, 0.00) makes his encore outing after six shutout frames and 10 strikeouts against Columbia in his RiverDogs debut. West Virginia will send southpaw Oddy Nunez (1-0, 2.10) and the game can be tuned in on MyTV Charleston, Channel 36 on the local airwaves with Matt Dean and ABC News 4's Scott Eisberg on the call one last time, while also simulcasting on "The Big Talker" WTMA 1250 AM in the tri-county area with online streaming audio via the RiverDogs' TuneIn radio station .
RiverDogs single-game tickets, including options to the Riley Park Club, are available for the remainder of the 2018 campaign, the club's 25th season as the RiverDogs and their "175th season in dog years." Ticket information can be secured by contacting the box office at (843) 577-DOGS (3647) or online at www.riverdogs.com.
