Power Play Woes Cost Aces
October 13, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
Boise, Idaho â Cory Morgan scored the game-winner early in the third period and Anchorage wasted 12 power play opportunities as Idaho completed a sweep of the Aces with a 4-2 victory Saturday night before 4,540 at the Bank of America Centre.
Anchorage grabbed its first lead of the season shorthanded when Kimbi Daniels stole a crossing pass and fed Carl Drakensjo on the ensuing two-on-one for a 1-0 lead at 6:59. Four minutes later, Idaho took advantage of another power play chance with a perfectly timed deflection by Derek Atkinson that bounced past Aces netminder Christian Soucy to tie the game. Anchorage regained the lead early in the second frame on a J.J. Wrobel wrist shot that beat Idaho goaltender Jason Cugnet glove side at 6:29. Armed with a 2-1 lead, the Aces came up empty on numerous power play chances and the Steelheads took advantage of their own five-on-three opportunity to tie the game, as Jeremy Mylymok fired a slap shot from between the circles past Soucy at 12:15.
Idaho took its first lead at 6:14 of the final period as Morgan walked in and snapped a wrist shot that beat Soucy low glove. Anchorage enjoyed five more power plays, including one in the final 1:13 but failed to convert. Derek Paget's empty-netter with 26 seconds left in regulation sealed the Steelhead sweep. The Aces ended the series with one goal in 23 chances with the man advantage, while Idaho scored twice in seven opportunities. The Steelheads enjoyed a 32-18 advantage in shots on goal, and finished with a 73-35 bulge in the two-game series.
The Aces (0-2), who are 0-5-3 in their last eight regular season trips to Boise, return to the road next weekend for a Saturday night tilt at Bakersfield and a Sunday afternoon battle with defending WCHL champion Fresno. Coverage begins Saturday night at 5:45 p.m. ADT and Sunday afternoon at 3:45 p.m. ADT. Jack Michaels handles the play-by-play duties for all games on KFQD 750 AM.
