Bombers Record First Win, Top Nailers, 4-1

October 13, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Dayton Bombers News Release

Center Fred Slukynsky and winger Chris Thompson each scored a goal and an assist as the Dayton Bombers defeated the Wheeling Nailers 4-1 at the Nutter Center on Saturday night to record their first win of the 2002-2003 season (1-1-0).

Slukynsky stole the puck at the Wheeling line before he set up Chris Thompson for a short-handed goal at the 14:02 mark of the first period to give the Bombers the game's first lead. Though not credited with an assist, Slukynsky provided a screen to help defenseman Mike Vellinga score his first goal of the season on the power play at 11:15 of the second period to vault the Bombers to a 2-0 edge.

Though Wheeling's Chris McNamara pulled his team to within one with a power play score at 6:27 of the third period, the Bombers would pad their lead with two insurance goals within the last minute of the game. Andrew Williamson intercepted a clearing pass, then fed Slukynsky for his first goal of the season at 19:12. Torrey DiRoberto followed with a rebound goal, his second tally in as many games this season, on a power play with just six seconds left on the clock. Rookie goalie Shane Bendera stopped 28 shots to record his first professional win in his first Bombers' start.

The Bombers' next game is this Friday, October 18 at home against the Cincinnati Cyclones. 2000 Blue Jackets Team Posters will be given away at the game. Tickets for this game as well as all Bombers' home games can be purchased by calling (937) 775-4747 or by logging onto www.daytonbombers.com.
