Gulls Beat Ice Dogs 5-4

SAN DIEGO –– The Gulls beat the Long Beach Ice Dogs for the second night in a row 5-4 before a crowd of 3,707 at the San Sports Arena.

For the second night in a row the Gulls were first to score against the Ice Dogs. Last season's WCHL rookie of the year, Mike Garrow scored his first goal of the year on a power play opportunity at 10:07 of the first period. Assisting on the goal were Clayton Read and Jamie Black. Just two minutes later on the Gulls third power play chance of the period, Garrow struck again beating Boxma from the point. Helpers went to Trevor Sherban and Dennis Purdie. Seemingly unable to miss, Garrow struck again on the final power play of the period off passes from Black and Sherban, with just five seconds remaining. The goal solidified the first natural hat-trick of the season.

Just 1:48 into the second frame, R.J. Enga netted a short handed, unassisted, breakaway goal to put the Gulls up 4-0. The Ice Dogs retaliated three minutes later on a power play tally from Chris Peyton. Yevgeniy Kabanets earned the lone assist. At 10:50 into the frame, Long Beach narrowed the margin to two when Jeff Attard tipped in a shot from the point taken by Tyler Johnston. The second assist was credited to Chris Peyton.

For the third period in a row the Gulls were first to score. Special teams were the story of the night as yet another power play yielded Mark Pederson's second goal of the season just :22 seconds in. Enga, and Trevor Sherban assisted the goal. The Ice Dogs however, saw a sudden scoring surge as two goals in just under two minutes brought the score to within one. Long Beach's third goal was scored on a power play by Chris Peyton and assisted by Tomas Kapusta and Jamie O'Leary. The Ice Dogs fourth goal was also as a result of special teams as Tomas Hradecky banged one past Gulls goaltender, Trevor Koenig on the their sixth power play opportunity of the evening at 2:46. Credited with the assists was Chris Peyton and Tomas Kapusta. The Gulls managed to hold on to their one goal lead to end take the game 5-4.

Notes: San Diego is now 13-9-1 all-time against its Southern California rival... Defenseman Marc Busenburg and forwards Sylvain Deschatelets and Rob Voltera remain with the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears...

San Diego embarks on its first road trip of the season beginning Sunday, Oct. 20 at Bakersfield. The Blue and Orange will also play twice in Idaho and once in Long Beach before returning home to play Long Beach on Sunday, Oct. 27.
