
Mississippi Opens with Win at Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, La. - The East Coast Hockey League's Mississippi Sea Wolves (1-0-0) opened their seventh season on Saturday with a 3-2 road win at the Riverside Centroplex against the Baton Rouge Kingfish (1-1-0).
Mississippi veteran Cody Bowtell opened the score in the first period on the power play, beating Baton Rouge goaltender Jeff Blair at 9:16. Later in the frame, Steffon Walby made a beautiful backhand pass to Dave Paradise, who bulged the twine at 14:20, making it 2-0 Mississippi.
The Sea Wolves made the power play click again in the second period. Travis Lisabeth put his first goal of the campaign into the back of the net at 11:32, giving Mississippi a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes.
Baton Rouge got on track with the power play in the third, Clark Jones scored on Sea Wolves goalie Greg Gardner at 6:13. Then at 13:57, Bryan Richardson tallied to close the margin to 3-2 for Mississippi. But the Sea Wolves would fend off the Kingfish attack.
Gardner made 31 saves on 33 shots. Blair turned away 22 of 25 shots in the loss.
The Sea Wolves went 2 for 6 with the man advantage. The Kingfish finished 2 for 10 on the power play.
Worth Noting...coach Bob Woods announced that the players voted Steffon Walby team captain for a second straight season. Jim Baxter and Cody Bowtell were selected to wear the âA' as alternates captains.
The Sea Wolves home opener is tomorrow at 5:05 p.m. against intrastate rival Jackson at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. It's the first game in the battle for the Nextel Cup, between the two Mississippi based teams.
In a pregame ceremony tomorrow, Bob Woods will have his uniform number eight retired. The first 1000 fans, receive a special Shoe Carnival puck and the Blues Brothers will be performing. In addition, the Sea Wolves will be at Roadhouse Grill after the game. Meet the players and receive autographs!
All children 12 and under get in free, with a paid regular adult ticket. Adult ticket prices for individual games start at $8.
