San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO ââ Trevor Koenig turned aside all 30 shots while R.J. Enga added three points en route to the San Diego Gulls' 6-0 thrashing of the Long Beach Ice Dogs Saturday night, before a sellout Opening Night crowd of 12,920 at the San Diego Sports Arena.
The Gulls (1-0-0) opened this season's scoring with a power-play goal 12:29 into the first period. Former NHLer Mark Pederson took a feed from Clayton Read and wristed a shot over the shoulder of Long Beach goaltender B.J. Boxma. Trevor Sherban earned the second assist. The Ice Dogs (0-1-0) controlled the tempo and out-shot the Gulls 12-7 in the opening frame, but couldn't muster anything past Koenig.
Dean Tiltgen put the Blue and Orange up by two just 34 seconds into the second period, beating Boxma from the right faceoff circle. Enga and Mike Garrow were credited with the assists. Jamie Black gave the Gulls a commanding 3-0 lead midway through the frame slipping a backhander home. Pederson and Read each got their second points of the night with the helpers.
San Diego put the game away with its fourth unanswered goal 3:42 into the third stanza. Enga finished off a two-on-one rush for his first tally in a Gulls uniform. The goal came off setup passes from Dan Cousineau and Tiltgen. Enga notched his second straight goal at 11:58, from Tiltgen and Cousineau. Aaron Plumb capped the scoring at 14:02 from rookie David Neale and Clint Cabana.
Notes: The Gulls are now 6-2-0 all-time on Opening Night. They're 7-0-1 all-time on home openers... This is the third straight time the Gulls have opened the season against the Ice Dogs. San Diego is now 13-9-1 all-time against its Southern California rival... This was the fifth time in franchise history the Gulls have sold out a game. It's the first time since Jan. 29, 1999... Defenseman Marc Busenburg and forwards Sylvain Deschatelets and Rob Voltera remain with the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears...
The Gulls and Dogs meet again Sunday for a 5 p.m. contest. It will be the first Sunday Family Day with "Skate with the Gulls" immediately following the game. San Diego then embarks on its first road trip of the season beginning Sunday, Oct. 20 at Bakersfield.
