Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power beat the Lakewood BlueClaws 5-2 in 14 innings Tuesday evening at FirstEnergy Park. Jordan Luplow's second home run of the season broke a two-all tie in the 14th and gave the Power their fifth straight win.
Lakewood's Tyler Viza and West Virginia's Alex McRae matched zeros over the first five innings. Viza only allowed one hit and one walk while McRae surrendered two singles.
In the sixth inning, Jerrick Suiter led off with a single. Elvis Escobar laid a sac bunt down, but catcher Deivi Grullon's throw to first sailed wide and allowed Suiter to score the game's first run. Escobar reached third on the miscue and scored on a single by Cole Tucker for a 2-0 Power lead.
The BlueClaws tied that game in the bottom of the seventh against reliever Sam Street. Grullon scored on a Herlis Rodriguez single and Damek Tomscha crossed on a bunt hit from Derek Campbell to even the score.
West Virginia had at least on runner reach in the eighth, ninth, 11th, 12th and 13th innings. Lakewood had the go-ahead or winning run on in every inning after tying the score, including loading the bases in the bottom of the 13th with one out.
Luplow led off the top of the 14th with a solo home run to left off Manny Martinez. The Power would add two runs without the benefit of a base hit to extend the lead. Taylor Gushue scored on an error and Pablo Reyes came home on a sac fly by Suiter for a 5-2 edge.
Neither starting pitcher factored in the decision. McRae pitched six shutout innings, striking out six and walking none. Viza tossed eight complete, surrendering two unearned runs on five hits. Sam Street pitched five innings in relief, allowing two runs on seven hits in his longest appearance of the season. Junior Lopez (4-0) pitched a perfect 14th inning to seal the win. Manny Martinez (0-1) took the loss after allowing all three extra inning runs.
West Virginia and Lakewood conclude their three game series on Wednesday morning at 11:05 am. Colten Brewer will make his fourth start of the season for the Power and will be opposed by Ranfi Casimiro.
