Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
HICKORY, N.C. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds struggled to stay healthy on Tuesday night, battling through three injury substitutions in a 9-4 loss in Hickory. Delmarva fought back to keep it close until the first-place Crawdads pulled away with a four-run eighth inning.
Shorebirds pitchers Sebastian Vader and Zeke McGranahan both left their outing early with apparent injuries. Vader allowed two singles in the first inning, putting Hickory up 1-0 early. Vader departed after just one inning pitched, and then McGranahan struggled in his place. The reliever walked the first three batters he faced, surrendering four runs after a single, two errors and an RBI grounder. McGranahan reacted after a pitch to Jose Trevino, exiting with his own injury.
Despite the injuries, Delmarva rallied to pull within one run. The Shorebirds loaded the bases in the fourth, then Logan Uxa sliced a two-run double. Jonah Heim slapped a two-run single through the hole at shortstop, cutting the Crawdads' lead down to 5-4. Unfortunately, Heim also left with an injury while warming up for the bottom of the fourth.
Nick Cunningham gave a stellar effort out of the bullpen when the Shorebirds needed innings. With Vader and McGranahan exiting early, Cunningham pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief. The Shorebirds had a chance for the lead, but John Fasola stranded the bases loaded with a strikeout in the top of the eighth.
Dariel Delgado tossed two clean frames until slipping in the eighth. Hickory tagged Delgado for four runs, including a three-run double by Michael De Leon to open up a 9-4 advantage.
The Shorebirds will try to snap their five-game losing streak in Wednesday's finale. Left-hander Bennett Parry (3-3, 2.95) will start for Delmarva against Hickory right-hander Cody Buckel (0-0, 0.00). First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning at L.P. Frans Stadium.
