Asheville Tourists News Release
SAVANNAH, GA-- The Asheville Tourists did not make a whole lot of contact on Tuesday night and in turn dropped a 5-1 ballgame to the Savannah Sand Gnats. Brad Weick struck out nine Tourists, part of 13 overall punch-outs the Sand Gnats were able to record.
The Tourists took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first. Luis Jean singled and promptly stole second. Jean then scored on Josh Fuentes' RBI double up the third base line. That was the one and only time Asheville was able to push a runner across home plate.
Helmis Rodriguez was wild early and often for Asheville. The left-hander issued a total of five walks in only 2.2 innings pitched. He also threw four wild pitches; a category in which he leads the South Atlantic League with 15.
Savannah took advantage of a wild pitch in the bottom of the first to plate the tying run. Wuilmer Becerra put the Gnats in front later in the inning with an RBI single to left. Savannah added three in the third courtesy of three walks and two wild pitches. Tomas Nido capped the scoring with a two-run double to left.
Yoely Bello, Scott Firth, and Jerad McCrummen worked the final 5.1 innings for the Tourists in a relief capacity and kept the Sand Gnats from adding to their lead. Offensively, the Tourists had a few chances once Weick was removed from the game. They put two runners aboard in the sixth, seventh, and ninth innings; but came away empty-handed each time.
Jean finished 3-for-4 while Omar Carrizales contributed with a pair of singles. The five through nine spots in the Tourists batting order were a combined 0-for-18 with nine strikeouts.
Asheville and Savannah will play a series rubber match on Wednesday night at 7:05pm. The Tourists are 1-5 through the first six games of their scheduled seven-game road trip.
