POWER REPLAY: West Virginia fell 6-5 at Hickory on Saturday night in walk-off fashion. The Crawdads held a 4-0 lead after three, but the Power rallied for three runs over the fourth and fifth innings and trailed 5-3 heading into the top of the ninth. Junior Sosa scored on a double by Elias Diaz, who later scored on a double by Alen Hanson to tie the game at five. In the bottom of the ninth, Robbie Kilcrease allowed a single to Hanser Alberto, walked Zach Cone, and then surrendered a single to Drew Robinson that brought home the winning run.
HAPPY FOR THE HOMERS: Alen Hanson has matched Gregory Polanco with eight home runs for the team lead. The club leaders for the entire 2011 season were Matt Curry and Rogelio Noris with nine apiece. The 2011 team hit a total of 63 home runs in 138 games, while the 2012 edition has hit 34 in 56 games, putting them on pace to hit 87 over the full season.
KEEP ON ROWLAND: Robby Rowland will make his third start for the Power since joining the roster on May 18. As a starter this season, the right-hander in 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA. In his career, Rowland has started 30 times and has a record of 7-14 with a 6.70 ERA as a starting pitcher (28 starts with Missoula in the Pioneer League and two this season prior to today).
WALK-OFF WOES: West Virginia has now played in six games that have been decided in the final at bat, going 1-5 in walk-off contests. Including last night, half of those six games have had a 6-5 final score. The Power also have lost in walk-off fashion at Ashville (4/10), Charleston (4/22), Greensboro (5/06 in 10 innings), and Greenville (5/20 in 10 innings). The lone walk-off win was on April 13 against Greenville on a wild pitch.
ALL-STAR ANNOUNCEMENT: The South Atlantic League will announce the 2012 All-Star Game rosters on Tuesday, July 5. The June 19 contest will be played at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park in Charleston, SC.
GRAB THE STEAMPOT: The Power are 45-35 all-time against the Crawdads dating back to 2005 and have an 18-22 record on the road during the series. West Virginia will host Hickory from August 23 through 26 at Appalachian Power Park, where the Power have a 27-13 mark against the Crawdads.
TRENDING SOUTH: The Power are on pace to finish the first half with a 24-46 record. If that holds true, it would be the lowest winning percentage (.343) in any half of a season since the team moved to Appalachian Power Park in 2005. The '05 club went 25-45 in the first half (.357 winning percentage). The second lowest percentage after 70 games belongs to the 2009 Power during the first year as a Pirates affiliate (27-43 (.386)).
PROMO UPDATE- JUNE 15: West Virginia will hold Pink Power Night on June 15 against the Hagerstown Suns. The team will don pink jerseys that will be auctioned off with proceeds benefiting the Komen for the Cure Foundation.
POWER POINTS: Former Power All-Star Jameson Taillon was named to the Florida State All-Star team on Friday. Taillon and Gerrit Cole were the only Bradenton Marauders selected to play in the FSL mid-summer classic... Nick Kingham allowed three home runs on Friday night marking the third time this season a Power pitcher has surrendered three home runs in a single game.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh dropped a 5-1 final at Milwaukee. Erik Bedard allowed all five runs over three and two thirds in the loss... Indianapolis bested Syracuse 7-3... Altoona's split a doubleheader with Portland, falling 5-3 and winning 3-2... Bradenton was swept in a doubleheader against Brevard County, losing 4-3 and 4-1.
