CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Julio Rodriguez blasted a game-tying homer in the eighth inning, but West Virginia's comeback fell short in extras to the Delmarva Shorebirds, who plated five runs in the tenth to hand the Power a 10-7 loss Thursday night at Appalachian Power Park.
Both teams were held at bay through the first three innings, as Ryne Inman allowed just one hit and struck out five batters while Nick Vespi was perfect through his first three stanzas. The Shorebirds (16-5, 64-26) did break through in the fourth on a solo homer from Seamus Curran, his second of the series, however, snagging a 1-0 lead. West Virginia (9-12, 46-45) had an answer in the bottom half of the inning, as David Sheaffer torched a base hit into left field that scored Julio to tie the ballgame at one.
In the fifth, the Shorebirds struck again with an RBI double from Cadyn Grenier that thrust Delmarva back on top, 2-1. The Power then responded again in the bottom of the frame with a Manny Pazos solo bomb off Vespi to left field to square the contest at two. An inning later, Kyle Hill came on in relief of Inman and Delmarva unloaded for three runs in the sixth to take a commanding 5-2 lead.
West Virginia battled back against the Shorebirds bullpen in the seventh, with Joseph Rosa working a leadoff walk before Nick Rodriguez launched a no-doubt long ball to left 403 feet that brought the Power back within a run. Dayeison Arias then twirled a perfect eighth inning with two strikeouts to keep West Virginia within striking distance.
The Power continued to rally against the Delmarva relief corps in the eighth, as Julio crushed the second pitch he saw from Jhon Peluffo 442 feet over the scoreboard in left field to knot the game at five. Sal Biasi (4-3) came on in the ninth and hurled a scoreless inning to keep the game tied, but West Virginia was set down in order in the bottom of the frame to force extras.
In the tenth, Biasi walked the bases loaded before getting his first out of the inning, then two more hits in the stanza allowed the Shorebirds to break open a five-run cushion. In the bottom half, Reed Hayes (1-0) ceded a pair of runs as well on an RBI single by Julio and a run-scoring groundout from Rosa, but fanned Nick Rodriguez, who represented the tying run, to close out the game and complete the three-game sweep for the first-place Shorebirds.
The Power now hits the road for a three-game series against the Greensboro Grasshoppers beginning Friday night at First National Bank Field, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. RHP Devin Sweet (4-4, 3.34 ERA) heads to the hill for West Virginia, while Greensboro counters with RHP Osvaldo Bido (10-5, 3.39 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on The Jock 1300 and 1340 AM, as well as online at wvpower.com and via the TuneIn Radio App and MiLB First Pitch App.
