Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
CHARLESTON, WV - West Virginia's offense was silenced by Lexington's Carlos Hernandez and two relievers in a 6-0 loss Wednesday evening at Appalachian Power Park in front of 5,252 fans.
The Legends (5-8, 42-39) opened up the scoring in the second, beginning the frame with four consecutive hits. Sebastian Rivero opened up the inning with a single against Power starter Domingo Robles (6-5). After a Cristian Perez double, Marten Gasparini stroked an RBI knock to score Rivero. Ricky Aracena then strode to the plate and drove in Perez and Gasparini on a single to center field that increased Lexington's lead to 3-0.
In the fifth, Dennicher Carrasco led off with a single before Rivero doubled to the left-center gap. Carrasco would score on the play off an error from Oneil Cruz, who had trouble with the relay throw from Fabricio Macias.
The Legends added an insurance tally in the eighth. Gasparini drew a one-out walk before scoring on a double to left. The next batter, MJ Melendez, reached on a two-out error by Rodolfo Castro that allowed Hicklen to charge home and put Lexington up 6-0.
Legends starter Carlos Hernandez (5-3) spun seven scoreless innings in his fourth start against West Virginia (8-5, 45-34) this season. In three starts at Appalachian Power Park, the righty has worked 17 innings while only ceding two runs.
Robles countered with a quality start of his own, allowing two earned runs through six innings and fanning six batters. The Dominican native has a team-high nine quality outings, while his six strikeouts extended his team-best total to 69.
Drew Fischer added two innings of work in relief of Robles and surrendered two runs. Power newcomer Elvis Escobar tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning in his second appearance since converting from an outfielder to a pitcher.
West Virginia continues its three-game series with Lexington Thursday night, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. from Appalachian Power Park.
