Asheville Tourists News Release
ASHEVILLE - The Asheville Tourists moved back into first place in the South Atlantic League Southern division with an 8-6 win over the Rome Braves on July 4. McCormick Field was sold out and the fans watched fireworks on the field and again after the game.
Asheville blasted three Home Runs in the win; including back-to-back long balls by Bret Boswell and Ryan Vilade. Chad Spanberger also added a two-run shot in the victory.
The two teams were tied up 1-1 until the Tourists went to work in the third. Spanberger's two-run blast coupled with a Vilade RBI double gave Asheville a 4-1 lead. In the fourth, Boswell and Vilade hit-back-to back Home Runs that capped a four-run frame and the Tourists led the Braves 8-1.
Rome began their comeback attempt with a four-run fifth inning. The Braves then received a solo Home Run from Drew Waters in the sixth to make it a two-run game. Asheville's bullpen buckled down and Nate Harris, Hayden Roberts, and Tommy Doyle combined to close out the win.
Frederis Parra made his Tourists debut and looked strong through four innings before finding trouble in the fifth. Parra did not factor in the decision. Rome's starter Jasseel Del La Cruz suffered the loss by allowing all eight of Asheville's runs over 3.1 innings.
The Tourists and the Braves are back in action at McCormick Field on Thursday night at 7:05pm.
