Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
Fargo, ND -Aaron Shafer pitched 7 1/3 innings while Jon Gaston and Zach Penprase both hit two-run home runs for the RedHawks in a 10-1 rout of the Rockland Boulders on August 18, 2012 in front of a sell-out crowd of 4,491, the 10th sellout at Newman Outdoor Field this season.
Rockland put their first and only run on the board in the first inning on a Keith Brachold solo home run to give the Boulders a 1-0 lead.
The RedHawks stranded runners on third in the first and second but were unable to capitalize until the third. Eric Campbell hit an RBI groundout and Ryan Delgado poked an RBI single to right field to give the RedHawks their first lead at 2-1.
Fargo-Moorhead's offense exploded in the fourth scoring five runs on sacrifice flies by Nic Jackson and Campbell while Jon Gaston hit his 11th home run of the season to extend the lead to 7-1.
The RedHawks continued to pour it on in the fifth. Marcos Rodriguez hit a double, Todd Jennings singled, Cota hit a sacrifice fly to score Rodriguez, and Zach Penprase hit his third home run of the homestand to put the RedHawks up 10-1.
Rockland attempted a rally in the seventh getting a Ryan Mollica walk and a Jonathan Smith single, but the threat was ended on a 4-6-3 double play.
RedHawks starter Aaron Shafer (8-5) pitched 7 1/3 innings scattering four hits on one earned, two walks, while striking out nine. Ethan Opsahl relieved Shafer and pitched a scoreless 1 2/3 innings.
"That was the best game I've seen him pitch this season," said RedHawks manager Doug Simunic on Aaron Shafer's start. "He was ahead of a lot of hitters which is a big key for him, most of the balls were on the ground and if he can do that he's pretty good.
Jennings was 3-for-4, Rodriguez, Delgado, and Ryan Stovall each had two hits while Penprase and Campbell had two RBIs to round out the RedHawks (57-29) lineup.
Rockland (43-43) is now 0-5 on their current interleague road trip. Starter Will Hassett lasted only four innings giving up seven earned runs on six hits, five walks and a strikeout. Dan Jurik pitched two innings of relief and MacKenzie King pitched a scoreless seventh and eight for the Boulders.
Brachold was 2-for-4 and responsible for the lone Rockland run. Chris Valencia, Gabby Martinez, and Jonathan Smith each had hits.
The RedHawks and Boulders conclude their three-game series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Newman Outdoor Field.
