Pounds' Heroics Lift Revs in Wild Finish on Historic Night

(York, Pa.) - On the night that the York Revolution retired the number 35 of eight-year Revs pitcher Corey Thurman, York scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, going ahead on Bryan Pounds' two-run home run to left, as the Revs took down the Sugar Land Skeeters 13-11 in a wild Saturday night at PeoplesBank Park. The win gives the Revs (14-9) sole possession of first place in the Freedom Division and a chance to close out a series win over the Skeeters (13-10) on Sunday afternoon.

Down 11-7, Jason Repko took a pitch in the back with one out. Isaias Tejeda followed with a single, bringing up Andres Perez. Perez then tagged a line drive into left center for a triple, plating both runners to make it 11-9.

After a popout, Joel Guzman stroked an opposite field base hit to bring home Perez. That brought up Bryan Pounds, who took a 1-0 pitch and deposited it over the Arch Nemesis and deep into the Pennsylvania night, giving the Revs their first lead since the fifth inning.

York scraped together an insurance run on a Salvador Paniagua RBI single before handing it off to closer Mike DeMark, who locked it down with a 1-2-3 ninth to send the weekend crowd of 3,889 home late but happy.

Ron Schreurs (1-0) earned the win after navigating his way through the end of the seventh and the eighth. Robbie Weinhardt (0-1) took the loss after giving up the go-ahead homer to Pounds. DeMark's save was his Atlantic League-leading eighth of the year.

A wild first inning set the tone for the night. Jeff Dominguez got it going with a one-out single in the top of the frame, and then Delwyn Young reached on an error. Three singles in a row by Kent Matthes, Travis Scott, and Jeremy Barfield brought a pair home for the Skeeters, but James Simmons buckled down to strike out the next two to leave the bases loaded.

The Revs would not take long to counter. Repko singled to right and took second on a wild throw to the infield. Tejeda was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double but sent Repko to third on his first of three hits. Perez followed by blasting a double that one-hopped over the wall in left center to cut the deficit in half, then two batters later Guzman laced a double of his own down the left field line to tie it at 2-2.

Sugar Land retook the lead on a Young single in the second, and it stayed 3-2 until York's big bang with five in the fifth. Tejeda and Perez got it going with two-out singles, then after back-to-back walks to Telvin Nash and Guzman, Pounds gave a preview of things to come, scorching a fly ball halfway up the wall in left center, clearing the bases. Michael Rockett followed with a pinch-hit single up the middle to give the Revs a sudden 7-3 lead.

Sugar Land got a rally of its own going on a bloop single by Patrick Palmeiro. Beamer Weems then drew a walk to chase starter Simmons from the game. Mariel Checo entered from the bullpen and proceeded to walk a man, give up a sac fly, allow another to score on a wild pitch, and walk a second to put two on.

Ty'Relle Harris then came on to pitch to Young, who took him deep to left center for a three-run homer, making it 8-7. Moments later saw the ejection of both York manager Mark Mason and Harris after an argument with the home plate umpire. The Revs eventually saw three ejected from the game as Sunday's starter Micah Owings was tossed from the dugout and hit the showers in the seventh.

The Skeeters put three more runs on the board in the seventh as Young swept the bases clean with a double to make it 11-7 and set up York's heroics in the eighth.

Pounds drove in a Revs' season-high five runs on the night, scoring twice and finishing a triple shy of the cycle. Perez went 3-for-5 with a trio of runs and RBIs, falling a homer short of his own cycle.

Tejeda scored twice and extended his hitting streak to eight games with a 3-for-5 night. He is hitting .545 (18-for-33) over that span with four three-hit performances to boot.

Repko, Guzman, and Josh Wilson each had two hits as the Revs notched a season-high 17 base knocks.

Young and Matthes each plated four for the Skeeters as Sugar Land got hits from all nine positions in the batting order.
