Bridgewater, NJ - The Lancaster Barnstormers (10-13) took the three game series over the Somerset Patriots (17-7) with a 6-4 win on Sunday afternoon at TD Bank Ballpark.
With the game tied 4-4 in the top of the ninth, the Barnstormers scored two runs on a base hit by Josh Whitaker, who finished with three RBI in the contest.
Once again the Patriots took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Matt Fields and a sacrifice fly by Yovan Gonzalez.
"We did get to [starting pitcher Terry Doyle] early, but then he settled in and did a pretty good job. That lineup is full of a bunch of tough outs, and with the conditions out there too, the ballgame can change on one pitch, one swing, or one play," said Somerset Patriots manager Brett Jodie.
The Barnstormers jumped in front in the fifth inning on a bases loaded hit by pitch and a two-run single by Jeff Kobernus for a 3-2 advantage.
Somerset answered immediately to tie up the game on an Eric Farris single in the bottom of the frame.
Lancaster then recaptured the lead on a solo home run by Whitaker (4) to lead off the sixth inning.
The Patriots tied the game up in the eighth inning on an RBI groundout by Mycal Jones before surrendering the two runs for the 6-4 final.
"It was back-and-forth. They answered a couple times and took the lead. We came back and tied it. It was a good game and some things just didn't go our way. We have to start making our own breaks and make sure we are a little more fundamentally sound," Jodie added.
Scott Gracey (2-0) picked up the win, allowing a run on a hit in one inning pitched. Kyler Newby (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing two earned runs on two hits in an inning of work. Cory Burns earned his fourth save of the season.
Patriots starting pitcher Jeremy Horst allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits in five innings pitched in a no-decision.
The 2016 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Friday, May 20th when the team returns to TD Bank Ballpark for a weekend series against the Long Island Ducks. To purchase tickets, visit www.somersetpatriots.com.
