New Britain Bees News Release

(New Britain, Conn.) The New Britain Bees capped their weekend series vs. the in-state rival Bridgeport Bluefish by sweeping both ends of the doubleheader by scores of 6-1 and 2-1, earning their first sweep of a series in team history.

PITCHERS OF RECORD

Game 1- W: Brian Dupra (2-0) | L: David Anderson (0-2)

Game 2- W: Craig Stem (1-2) | L: Brian Moran (0-2)

The Bees' offense was firing on all cylinders in the first game on a breezy afternoon. Bees' batters struck for five runs in the bottom of the second, highlighted by Jon Jones' RBI triple and a two-run single by Craig Maddox. Maddox was a perfect 4-4 at the plate in the first game.

Making his third start of the season, Brian Dupra tossed five strong innings, allowing just one run on four hits while lowering his ERA on the season to a paltry 1.84 while earning his second win. Upon alum Anthony Marzi finished the game off with two scoreless innings.

In the second game, the Bees offense picked up where it left off in game one, getting on the board in the first inning on a run-scoring single by Maddox which brought home leadoff hitter Brandon Chaves. However, Bluefish starter Jimmy Patterson settled down to hold the Bees scoreless for the remainder of his 5.1 inning outing.

Bees' starter Cole Johnson fired six quick, excellent innings, at one point retiring 10 straight Bluefish. The right-hander ran into trouble in the sixth, allowing a Luis Hernandez game-tying RBI single. Johnson posted a strong final line, however, allowing just the one run on three hits and striking out one.

The game would head to extra innings (starting in the eighth inning with both games being only seven innings due to the doubleheader) with the bullpens of both teams putting up zeroes on the scoreboard. The duo of Grady Wood and Craig Stem combined to toss four scoreless innings, striking out four and allowing just one hit in relief.

With lefty Brian Moran on the mound for the Bluefish, however, the Bees mounted a rally, putting two runners on with two out. Nine-hole hitter Anthony Hewitt hit a ground ball deep in the shortstop hole, which was smothered by Luis Hernandez. While Bridgeport shortstop made an unsuccessful attempt at getting the force out at second base, Jonathan Roof- who had reached on a single and moved up on a wild pitch- never stopped running, coming all the way around to score with the Bees second walk-off win of the season.

After a day off tomorrow, the Bees will hit the road to take on the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs for the first rime this season. New Haven native Josh Zeid will toe the rubber for New Britain on Tuesday night.
