Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Brooks Pounders outdueled Michael Feliz in a pitcher's duel as Northwest Arkansas edged Corpus Christi 2-1 Saturday at Whataburger Field before 7,277.
Both starters worked six innings. Pounders scattered five hits and walked one in an 89-pitch performance, striking out five. Feliz gave up seven hits and struck out six. He threw 87 pitches (65 strikes).
Feliz and Pounders traded zeros over the first four innings before Northwest Arkansas (21-33; 61-63) broke through.
Speed was the theme in a two-run fifth. Lead-off man Lane Adams bunted his way on, stole second and third, and scored when nine-hole hitter Terrance Gore burned Leo Heras with a two-out triple, the Corpus Christi left fielder playing in. That run was the first against Feliz in 31 innings.
The order turned over, and Ramon Torres' single plated Gore.
Feliz stranded Gore 90 feet from home two innings earlier. Gore dropped a one-out bunt single and raced to third by continuing past second when Torres bounced out to third baseman Colin Moran. Feliz then fanned Raul Mondesi for his sixth strikeout in three innings.
Corpus Christi (30-25; 78-47) was able to post a lone run against Pounders in the sixth, when A.J. Reed's two-out drive to center field rattled the wall on the fly and tallied Teoscar Hernandez (single/stolen base). Hernandez was the first Hook in scoring position since a Moran double during the first.
Malcom Culver picked up save No. 7 with a four-batter ninth after Daniel Stumpf turned in two scoreless innings. Travis Ballew blanked the Naturals over the final three innings, recording four strikeouts.
Adams and Gore finished with three hits apiece for the visitors. Teammate Alex Liddi has a 14-game hitting streak, Mondesi a seven-gamer.
Edison Frias (1-1) faces Kyle Zimmer (1-3) Sunday at 6:05 in the series and homestand finale. It's H-E-B Kids Day, so all children run the bases postgame. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
