Northwest Arkansas Naturals News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The starting pitching has remained the constant for the Naturals throughout the stretch against the South Division. Entering Saturday night's game at Whataburger Field, the starters had accrued a 3.00 ERA in their previous 10 games and game two starter, Brooks Pounders only lowered it working 6.0 innings of one-run baseball as Northwest Arkansas held on for the win, 2-1 over the Hooks.
The win forces a rubber match between the two clubs set for Sunday evening. It is the second straight series with a deciding third game for the Naturals.
Pounders (2-3, 2.15) set the tone early working five scoreless innings to start his outing while the offense gave him just enough support to earn his sixth decision of the year.
Lane Adams started the offense in the top of the fifth off Hooks' starter Michael Feliz (6-3, 2.23) with an infield single and proceeded to swipe second and third base in the ensuing two at-bats.
That brought Terrance Gore to the plate with two-outs and the go-ahead run 90 feet away. Gore smacked a 3-2 Feliz offering over the left-fielder Leo Heras' head and raced to third with an RBI triple giving Northwest Arkansas (61-63/21-33) a 1-0 advantage. Ramon Torres, two pitches later, roped a single to extend the lead to 2-0.
Pounders allowed his one run in the last of the sixth before ending his outing with six complete frames. He turned the ball over to left-hander Daniel Stumpf who twirled two shutout innings while Malcom Culver threw a scoreless ninth to notch his seventh save of the season.
Alex Liddi singled in his first at-bat to extend his hitting streak to 14 games, the longest active streak in the Texas League while Mondesi finished 1-for-4 with a his 11th double of the season to give him hits in seven straight games.
The rubber match will take place at Whataburger Field with a 6:05 p.m. first pitch. Right-hander Kyle Zimmer (1-3, 2.55) will make his 5th start of the season against right-hander Edison Frias (1-1, 10.13) who will make his 4th start of the season for the Hooks.
