TONIGHT: The Potomac Nationals and Frederick Keys meet in game two and of a three-game series...Last night Justin Jones tossed a season-high 8 2/3 innings helping to guide the P-Nats to a 3-1 series-opening win over the Keys....Potomac's lead over second-place Frederick in the Carolina League Northern Division is 1.0 game.
TONIGHT: The Potomac Nationals send left-hander Odalis Perez to the mound making his first rehab outing...He is expected throw four to five innings or 65 pitches....Perez was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of left shoulder tendonitis on June 4th. Perez has not pitched in a game since June 3 and hopes to return to Washington next week....The 30-year-old becomes the sixth Washington player this season to play with Potomac after Ronnie Belliard, Paul Lo Duca, Shawn Hill, Chad Cordero, and Elijah Dukes all had brief stints with the P-Nats while recovering from an injury....Perez was signed to a minor league contract by the Nationals on February 19 and was the club's Opening Day starter, tossing five innings and allowing just one run in the inaugural game at Nationals Park against the Atlanta Braves...He ranks seventh in wins (66) among active Major League pitchers born in the Dominican Republic...A former non-drafted free agent signed by the Braves in 1994, Perez made his Major League debut in 1998 with Atlanta and has also pitched with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Kansas City Royals in his nine-year big league career...In 13 starts with the big league club this season, he is 2-5 with a 4.09 ERA.
VIEW FROM THE TOP: Today marks the 73rd consecutive day the P-Nats have been in or had a share of the division lead since moving to the top spot on April 10...Last season the Nationals spent 31 consecutive days in first from April 5 through May 5...The P-Nats ended the first half in last place, 10 games under .500 and only saw first place for one day, June 21, after May 5.
FRUSTRATED BY FREDERICK: The Potomac Nationals have not been able to solve the Frederick Keys in 2008...The P-Nats are 5-7 against the Keys, the only opponent which the club has a losing record against...While Potomac is 3-2 at the Pfitz, the Nationals are just 2-5 at Harry Grove Stadium including dropping three of four to Frederick last weekend...The Keys have taken five of the last seven meetings between the two...All 12 meetings thus far have been decided by four runs or less including nine decided by just three runs or less...Last season Potomac went just 7-12 against Frederick including a 3-7 mark at home.
NO DEE-TURING BROWN: Dee Brown is in the middle of a season-long six-game hit streak...Over that span he is 7-for-24 (.292) with a home run and 4 RBI...The former 10th-round pick in 2005 has raised his average from .259 to .264 in the process.
MOVING UP IN THE WORLD: All-Star outfielder Edgardo Baez hit in the number three spot in the order for the first time this season and went 1-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts...He has appeared in every spot in the line-up except first, fourth, and ninth...The 22-year-old's best performance has come in the seventh spot in the order where he has hit .293 with five home runs and 18 RBI in 28 games.
THERE'S A FIRST FOR EVERYTHING: Bill Rhinehart hit a two-run homer on a 1-1 change up from Frederick All-Star starter Jake Arrieta in his first Carolina League at-bat...Trevor Lawhorn also hit his first Carolina League home run last, taking Arrieta deep leading off the bottom of the fifth...Last season Brett McMillan also homered in his Carolina League debut at Winston-Salem on June 12 although it was in his third at-bat.
ROSTER MOVES: The Potomac Nationals announced today that pitchers Craig Stammen and Jack Spradlin have been added to Double-A Harrisburg, and right-hander Josh Wilkie will replace Stammen on the Carolina League All-Star roster...Stammen went 4-2 while posting the Carolina League's lowest ERA (2.21) in 15 appearances with Potomac this season...The Versailles, Ohio, native helped anchor the Nationals pitching staff that ranked second in the Carolina League with a 3.38 ERA through 74 games...Stammen receives his second promotion of the season after he made an appearance for Triple-A Columbus on May 1st pitching two innings and allowing one run...Spradlin earned his second save in last night's contest and receives his first promotion above the Advanced-A level in his career...The former 8th-round selection in 2005 was 4-0 with a 3.57 ERA in 23 appearances with the P-Nats...The 23-year-old worked 7 1/3 scoreless frames spanning four games from May 29 to June 7...Potomac's active roster now stands at 23 with 11 pitchers and 12 position players.
