Myrtle Beach Pelicans (48-26, 3-1) vs. Lynchburg Hillcats (29-45, 0-4)
Saturday, June 21 -- 6:05 PM
Lynchburg City Stadium -- Lynchburg, V.A.
Game #75, Road Game #40
TODAY'S GAME AT A GLANCE: The Pelicans aim for the series clinching win in game two against the Lynchburg Hillcats. It would be their 16th series win of the season and ninth on the road.
Last night, the Pelicans set numerous season-highs in a 22-3 drubbing of the Hillcats. The 22 runs is a season-high for Myrtle Beach and a Carolina League high in 2008. The Frederick Keys previously scored 19 runs against the Winston-Salem Warthogs on June 6th. The 21 hits was also a season-high for Myrtle Beach and second in the Carolina League this season. Tyler Flowers led the offensive attack with two home runs and seven RBIs.
TODAY'S STARTING PITCHERS: In a righty vs. lefty matchup, Jeff Lyman makes his first start of the season, while Brian Holliday makes his 14th start of the season.
Lyman: Making his first start since July 27th of 2007, when he went five innings against the Lynchburg Hillcats and allowed four hits and five earned runs. Following Deunte Heath' promotion to Double-A Mississippi the Pelicans are searching for a fifth starter in the rotation. In 20 appearances out of the bullpen in '08, Lyman has compiled 42.1 innings and has given up 29 hits and 16 earned runs. His longest two outings of the year are 4.0 innings in length, against the P-Nats (4/8) and the Warthogs (5/27). The Carolina League bats just .192 against Lyman. He has not allowed a run in his last three appearances, spanning 6.0 innings.
The San Francisco, CA native was selected in the second round of the 2005 draft by the Braves. Tonight will mark his third start in the Carolina League, as he made two late last season for the Pelicans.
Holliday: Has struggled mightily this season. In 13 starts and 58.1 innings, he has allowed 92 hits and 43 earned runs. The Carolina League is batting .361 against him. Holliday has allowed double-digit hit totals in four of his last five starts. In his last four starts, he has surrendered a combined 36 hits and 19 earned runs in a total of 17.1 innings. To make matters worse, Holliday is 0-5 with a 9.21 ERA in starts at Lynchburg City Stadium. Third and fourth innings have been killer for him this season, as he has ERAs of 11.57 and 13.50 respectively. Holliday is both third in the league in hits allowed and earned runs allowed.
The Sewickly, PA native was selected by the Pirates in the 12th round of the 2002 draft. In his seventh professional season, Holliday has not passed beyond the Advanced-A level. This is his fourth stint in Lynchburg (05, 06, 07).
HISTORIC NIGHT FOR MB: Since records were kept starting with the '04 season, the 22 runs is a franchise best for Myrtle Beach. The previous high was 15 runs, last accomplished on June 25th, 2007 at Lynchburg City Stadium. The 21 hits by Myrtle Beach is not a franchise record. The Pelicans managed 24 hits in the game against Lynchburg in 2007.
SEVEN RBI MAN: Pelicans catcher Tyler Flowers slammed two home runs and drove in seven runs, which is a Pelicans season-high in '08. Previously, Ernesto Mejia knocked in six runs on May 3rd against the Salem Avalanche. Flowers registers the fifth multi-home run game in 2008 for the Pelicans. The Pelicans have homered in six consecutive games.
QUALITY STARTS: Scott Diamond's six inning performance last night marks the fourth straight game in which the Pelicans starter has gone at least through the sixth inning. The streak started on the first game of the road trip when Ryne Reynoso went six innings against Salem. Chris Vines and Kyle Cofield each went seven in games two and three respectively against the Avs.
