Kinston, NC - The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, saw Kinston score three runs in the first inning to take a 3-1 victory Saturday night at Grainger Stadium. Kinston (4-1) got seven innings of one-run ball from starter Hector Rondon to even the series with Salem (2-3).
In the first, John Drennen opened the offense for the Indians against Casey Hudspeth by poking a double to right field. Then, Beau Mills singled to left to put runners at the corners. Next, Nick Weglarz bashed a single to right to score Drennen for a 1-0 lead. Three batters later, Chris de la Cruz socked a two-run single for a 3-0 advantage.
Salem, though, only mustered one run in the ball game against a trio of Kinston pitchers. With two out in the sixth, Jordan Parraz singled to right field and stole second. With Tim Torres at the plate, starter Hector Rondon chucked a ball off of Parraz's helmet at second on a pickoff play. The ball ricocheted into left field and Parraz scored.
Salem attempted to tie the game in the ninth, but could only muster two base runners against Sung-Wei Tseng and Luis Perdomo. The final pitcher, Perdomo, earned his 18th save of the season.
The Avs and Indians play the rubber match Sunday at 2 PM with lefty Sergio Severino throwing for the Avalanche against Kinston's Carlton Smith.
