New York Red Bulls News Release

HARRISON, NJ (May 16, 2014) - U.S. Soccer announced today the fourth round pairings for the 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the tournament's 101th iteration. The New York Red Bulls have been drawn against the winner of the New York Cosmos/Brooklyn Italians SC match that will take place on May 28. If the Cosmos win their third round match, the fourth round tie would take place at the Cosmos' home field of Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, Long Island. If the Italians win, then the tie would move to Red Bull Arena.

The fourth round will take place June 10-18, leaving the possibility for a number of early-round weekend games, a first in the modern era of the tournament (1995 to present). Home teams will determine the exact dates from among the visiting teams' available dates. The exact schedule will be announced next week.

Home teams are determined by a random selection process among those clubs that have applied to host and whose venues meet the minimum tournament requirements. The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup fourth round draw process took place Friday morning at U.S. Soccer House.

The Brooklyn Italians (NPSL) won the U.S. Open Cup in 1991 and this year defeated the Jersey Express, 4-2, on May 14 to advance to the third round to play the Cosmos. The New York Cosmos (NASL) are just entering the cup competition. The third round tie between these two clubs will be held at Belson Stadium at St. John's University on May 28. The Red Bulls have faced either of these clubs.

The Red Bulls will compete in the single-elimination tournament for the 18th time. Last year, the Red Bulls defeated PDL side, Reading United AC, 2-0, at Red Bull Arena before falling to the New England Revolution on June 12, 4-2 at Harvard University's Soldier's Field Soccer Stadium in the fourth round. Since Red Bull Arena opened in 2010, the Red Bulls are a perfect 5-0 in the Open Cup at home. New York's best finish in the tournament was in 2003, making it to the final before falling to the Chicago Fire, 1-0. The Red Bulls are 20-17 all-time in the competition and, in addition to their 2003 finals run, have made the final four three other times.
