Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
PEARL, Miss. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (17-30) defeated the Mississippi Braves (21-24) by a 5-2 score in the second game of the five-game series at Trustmark Park on Thursday night.
Jacksonville right-handed starting pitcher Cody Poteet (3-3) earned the victory, pitching seven innings where he allowed a run on two hits with no walks and six strikeouts. Poteet allowed his run and two hits in the first inning, then retired the final 19 batters he faced in order, working his last six innings in perfect fashion.
Mississippi left-handed starting pitcher Tucker Davidson (1-3) took the loss, working four and two-third innings where he allowed five runs (one earned) on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Jacksonville left-handed relief pitcher Dylan Lee earned his fourth save of the year by working a perfect ninth inning to preserve the win.
Mississippi struck first in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single by Riley Unroe to lead 1-0. Jacksonville stormed back with five runs in the top of the fifth, knocking Davidson out of the game. John Silviano tied the game with an RBI fielder's choice, then Poteet helped his own cause with an RBI single to put Jacksonville in front 2-1. A wild pitch by Davidson scored Silviano during Brian Miller's at-bat to make it a 3-1 game. Miller then followed with a two-run single to put the score at 5-1 Jumbo Shrimp.
The Braves did strike for a run in the bottom of the eighth against Jacksonville right-handed relief pitcher Brett Graves. A Drew Waters RBI groundout made it a 5-2 game, which would be the final score.
The Jumbo Shrimp and Braves will continue their series with the third game of the five-game set on Friday night at 7:35 p.m. eastern. Right-handed pitcher Robert Dugger (4-5, 3.47 ERA) will start for Jacksonville against Mississippi right-handed pitcher Jasseel De La Cruz (0-0, 0.00 ERA).
