Pote Pitches Another Gem

With bats as cold as the four degree Celsius weather the Calgary Vipers were beaten 9-1 by the Edmonton Capitals at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. Capitals ace Lou Pote (2-0) got the start and was excellent in allowing only one run in seven innings of work while striking out seven. Meanwhile Garret Holleran (0-3) ran into trouble in the middle innings giving up five runs in the third, one in the fourth, and three more in the fifth for a total of nine against on 12 hits in four and a third innings.

Out of the bullpen Delta, British Columbia native Shawn Hetherington made his professional debut and threw an inning and two-thirds scoreless while Scott Watson tossed two scoreless frames with two strikeouts.

"Lou Pote pitched a great game but if we don't play defense we're not going to win games," said Manager Morgan Burkhart.

Edmonton jumped onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning when Lou Pote doubled, Todd Linden singled in one, Matt Rogelstad reached on a throwing error, Enrique Cruz cashed a run in with a groundout, Tom Collaro base hit a run in, Alex Chavez and Lou Santangelo singled to load the bases followed by Brent Metheny who knocked in two with a knock for a 5-0 advantage.

The Capitals added a run in the fourth as Linden singled, stole second base, advanced to third on a grounder, and scored on a Cruz groundball for a 6-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth frame Edmonton's scoring continued when Metheny doubled, Pete Tountas walked, Pote singled on the infield and with no one covering home plate Metheny scored followed by Linden who tripled in two runs for a 9-0 advantage.

Calgary got a run back in the sixth inning as Jonny Kaplan doubled and Drew Miller knocked in him with a base hit for a 9-1 score.

Calgary continues this series in Edmonton against the Capitals on Saturday June 4th at 7:00.

The Vipers return home to Calgary and Foothills Stadium on Monday June 6th at 6:30 as they host the Edmonton Capitals and tickets will all be priced at $5.00.
