Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
HARLINGEN - Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings catcher Francisco Hernandez hit a game-tying single in the ninth and a game-winning single in the 13th as the WhiteWings beat the Edinburg Roadrunners 4-3 on Friday at Harlingen Field.
It was the WhiteWings' (7-3) longest game since 2009.
The Roadrunners (3-7) led 3-1 entering the bottom of the ninth, but after Julio Castro struck out the first two batters he faced, Tim Rotola drew a six-pitch walk and then Antonio DeJesus came up with the first hit against Castro this season, an RBI-double. Leivi Ventura drew a five-pitch walk and Hernandez jumped on the first pitch he saw for a game-tying single to force extra innings.
Blake Parry (0-1) retired the first two batters he faced in the 13th, but Rotola drew a six-pitch walk, DeJesus singled and Ventura walked to load the bases, setting up Hernandez's walk-off single.
That made a winner of Mickey Cassidy (1-0), who pitched scoreless 12th and 13th innings.
The Roadrunners struck against Eric Blackwell with two outs in the third. Michael Lewis drew a walk and Brandon Wilkerson added on to his league-leading RBI total (13) with a double to make it 1-0.
That was it against Blackwell, who struck out nine while scattering four hits and two walks in six innings.
The WhiteWings responded against Scott Wingo in the fifth. Leo Delgado drew a leadoff walk and Brandon Decker laid down a sacrifice bunt. After a wild pitch moved Delgado to third, Tim Rotola hit an RBI-groundout to tie the game.
That was it against Wingo, who scattered four hits, three walks and two hit batsmen in six and one-third innings. The WhiteWings have now been hit by a league-leading 21 pitches.
In the top of the seventh, the Roadrunners put runners at second and third with two outs. Danny Rondon threw a wild pitch, allowing Adam Gordon to score, and then a throw to third went into leftfield, allowing Lewis to score.
The WhiteWings and Roadrunners play game three of this four-game series on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. The first 500 fans ages 16 and up will receive a jersey koozie, courtesy of Boggus Ford. Right-hander Luis Chirinos (0-0, 0.00) is expected to face right-hander Ryan Harris (1-1, 9.25). Gates open at 6:05.
