Ports take down Bakersfield for fifth straight victory

The Stockton Ports (28-26) beat the Bakersfield Blaze (24-29) 3-1 for their season high fifth consecutive victory Thursday night at Banner Island Ballpark.

The Ports struck first with one run in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, catcher Kurt Suzuki doubled, and one out later, Daric Barton singled up the middle to drive in Suzuki. The RBI was Barton's 31st of the season.

Bakersfield scored a run in the top of the third to even the score at 1-1 when right fielder Anthony Webster blasted a solo homerun onto the Sprint Home Run Hill in right center field.

Ports' starter Brad Knox was outstanding Thursday night in earning his first win of the year. Knox threw 7 innings, allowing 1 run and just 3 hits while fanning five batters.

Stockton regained the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth inning. Right fielder Richie Robnett singled to extend his season long hitting streak to 11 games. Suzuki followed with his second double of the night. With runners on second and third, Vasili Spanos drove in Robnett with a sacrifice fly to the centerfield.

The Ports added an insurance run in the seventh inning to make the score 3-1. Spanos drove home Suzuki who had doubled again. Suzuki finished the game 3-4 with three doubles, and two runs scored. Ports third baseman Vasili Spanos had one hit to extend his season high hitting streak to 11 games. Spanos also drove in two runs to give him 34 RBI on the year.

Knox and relievers Jared Burton and Jeff Muessig held the Blaze to just five hits. Aside from Webster's home run, just one Blaze batter reached third base.
