Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. -- The Ports (18-29) made it interesting in the late innings against the Modesto Nuts (33-14) on Thursday night, but the reigning champs still won game five 8-4 at Banner Island Ballpark.
Starter Steven Echavarria had some positives in his sixth professional start, working into the fifth inning for the first time in his career. However, he had some trouble putting away hitters and closing out innings.
He would get to two strikes on batters and two outs in innings, but Modesto was able to get hits and score in those occasions. The Nuts got two runs in the second inning, with the first coming on a two- out single by Milkar Perez on a two-two count for a 1-0 lead. Then Jacob Sharp got caught in a run down after his base hit that allowed Perez to score to put Modesto up 2-0.
Lazaro Montes hit his league-leading ninth home run with two outs in the third to make it a 4-0 lead.
Modesto got another run in the fifth and three more runs in the sixth for a 8-0 advantage.
The Ports would score three of their own in the bottom of the inning. A walk, hit by pitch, and an error would load the bases with no one out. Dereck Salom singled past a diving attempt by Modesto shortstop Tai Peete to get the Ports on the board. A bases-loaded walk for Nate Nankil would push across the Ports second run, and a wild pitch scored another to make it an 8-3 game.
Stockton would leave the bases loaded however when a strikeout of Nelson Beltran ended the threat.
The Ports would get another run in the seventh on another bases-loaded walk from catcher Carlos Franco to make it 8-4, but a fly out from Elvis Rijo would leave the bases loaded again.
