Stockton Ports News Release

MODESTO, Calif. - The Stockton Ports embarked on an eight-game road trip on Thursday night and opened a critical four-game series at John Thurman Field with a shutout win. The Ports outhit the Modesto Nuts 11-3 and went on to a 3-0 victory to pull even with the Nuts atop the North Division Wild Card standings.

Stockton's first run came in the second inning as B.J. Boyd led off with a single and scored on an ensuing double by Michael Soto, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. After Nuts starter Alex Balog (2-6) set the side down in order in the third, Tyler Marincov opened the fourth with a double to left and scored two batters later on an RBI single by Soto to make it a 2-0 game.

Balog allowed the third and final Stockton run in the sixth. Marincov led off with a double for the second time in as many at-bats and scored three batters later on a two-out RBI single by Trent Gilbert.

Balog suffered the loss, going 5.2 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out four.

Ports starter Casey Meisner (1-1) turned in his best outing since being traded to the A's from the New York Mets on July 28th. Meisner gave up a one-out single in the first to Michael Benjamin, but then went on to retire the next 11 batters in-a-row. After allowing a leadoff single to Rosell Herrera in the fifth, Meisner got a flyout and an inning-ending double-play ball off the bat of Correlle Prime to conclude his outing.

Meisner earned his first win with Stockton, going five innings and allowing two hits while striking out five.

Lou Trivino took over in the sixth and was dominant, allowing just one hit and retiring nine of the 10 batters he faced while striking out five.

Ben Bracewell (SV, 5) came on to pitch the ninth and issued a leadoff walk to Emerson Jimenez. After a wild pitch advanced Jimenez to second and a groundout advanced him to third with less than two outs, Bracewell recorded back-to-back strikeouts of Benjamin and Dillon Thomas to close the ballgame, preserve the shutout and notch his fifth save of the season.

The Ports and Nuts play the second game of their four-game set on Friday night at John Thurman Field. Daniel Mengden (4-3, 4.73 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Modesto right-hander Johendi Jiminian (4-8, 4.68 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PDT.
