Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Ports came through with one of their best pitching performances of the season on Saturday night at Banner Island Ballpark. For the third time on the year, the Ports held an opponent to just two hits as they scored a run in the eighth inning to defeat the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes by a final of 1-0.
Ports starter Dylan Covey pitched around a hit and a walk in the first inning and stranded runners at the corners. Covey went on to induce a double-play to pitch around a walk issued in the third. With two outs in the fourth, Covey was struck in the face by a line drive hit by Jacob Scavuzzo on which the out was recorded at first base. Covey, after laying face-down on the front of the mound for some time, would sit up and leave the field under his own power.
Covey went four scoreless innings and allowed one hit while striking out three.
Sam Bragg came on in relief of Covey and pitched three innings, retiring nine of the 10 batters he faced.
Chase De Jong (2-2), meanwhile, pitched around two singles allowed in the first and did not allow more than two hits in an inning until the bottom of the eighth. In the eighth, De Jong gave up a leadoff single to Brett Vertigan. Two batters later, Yairo Munoz singled to right to put runners at the corners with one out. Jake Nottingham came up next and hit a broken-bat groundout to second to score Vertigan with the first run of the game as Stockton took a 1-0 lead.
De Jong was lifted after Nottingham grounded out. The right-hander suffered the tough-luck loss, allowing one run on six hits while striking out five over a season-high 7.2 innings pitched.
Ben Bracewell (6-2), who pitched a perfect bottom of the eighth, went on to pick up the victory.
Corey Walter (SV, 2) entered the game to pitch the ninth and gave up a leadoff single to Delvis Morales to start the inning. Walter, though, would go on to get Johan Mieses to hit into a 6-3 double-play and Brandon Dixon to ground out to the shortstop Munoz to end the ballgame and notch his second save of the season.
The Ports and Quakes wrap up a four-game series on Sunday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Left-hander Matt Stalcup (1-3, 3.70 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Rancho Cucamonga right-hander Jonathan Richie (9-4, 4.16 ERA). First pitch is set for 6:10 p.m. PDT.
