Stockton Ports News Release
The Stockton Ports announced that Relief Pitcher Jared Burton was named the Rolaids Closer of the Month for the month of July.
Burton earned the award by putting up the best numbers for a closer in the last six years. The 6-foot-5 right-hander from Westminster, SC, saved 13 games in July for the Stockton Ports.
It is the best minor league mark since Pat Flury saved 14 games for Chattanooga, TN of the Southern League in June 1999. New Britain, CT's Brent Stentz, who went on to capture overall minor league Rolaids honors in 1998, had 14 saves in June of that season in the Eastern League.
The 24-year-old Burton had not been asked to close games on a regular basis during his four-year career until last month.
Burton is currently 4-2 on the season, with a 1.81 ERA. He has 53 strikeouts in 44.2 innings of work.
